Box blight and box tree moth in Broadstairs: diagnosis and treatment steps for CT10 gardens.

Box (Buxus sempervirens) is in more Broadstairs gardens than almost any other formal hedge species: the Victorian and Edwardian terraces between Broadstairs town centre, St Peter's and Reading Street are full of it. Since around 2011 two separate problems have been working through the UK's box population: box tree moth, an invasive pest that strips foliage from inside the bush outward, and box blight, a fungal disease that turns stems black and leaves brown. In 2024 the RHS recorded nearly five times as many box tree moth reports in the first four months of the year as in the same period in 2023. Many owners are treating the wrong problem, or treating the right one at the wrong time. Here is how I approach it.

Steps

Step 1: Diagnose the problem before touching anything

Box blight and box tree moth produce superficially similar results, both cause brown patches and bare sections, but the causes and treatments are entirely different. Confusing them wastes time and can make the situation worse. Do the diagnosis first, not last.

Signs of box tree moth (Cydalima perspectalis): Pull the outer foliage aside and look inside the bush. Caterpillars feed from the interior outward, so exterior damage is a late sign. Inside you will find: pale green and yellow-striped caterpillars up to 4cm long; white or cream webbing draped between branches; dark green or black frass (caterpillar droppings) collecting on stems and the soil below. The foliage is stripped and the stems left intact, at least initially. If you only see the outside, look for patches of foliage that are entirely missing or hanging as dried, dead material, with the stems beneath still green and structurally sound.

Signs of box blight (Pseudonectria buxi, previously Cylindrocladium buxicola): Brown patches on leaves with dark brown or black streaks running down the stems below. In wet weather, turn affected leaves over and look for white spore masses on the underside. The stems beneath affected patches turn black and die. Blight typically spreads outward from a central point of infection, so the brown patches tend to have a rough circular or irregular perimeter rather than the stripped-clean interior pattern of moth. No webbing, no frass.

A box can have both at once. Diagnose each problem separately and address both.

Step 2: For box tree moth, deploy a pheromone trap to time spraying correctly

Btk (Bacillus thuringiensis var. kurstaki), the biological insecticide registered for amateur use against box tree moth in the UK, only kills young caterpillars when they are actively feeding. It has no residual effect against eggs, adults or pupae. Spraying at the wrong point in the generation cycle achieves nothing: if you spray when adults are flying but before eggs have hatched, the product degrades before the caterpillars emerge. If you spray after the caterpillars are fully grown, they are past the stage where Btk is lethal.

Pheromone traps, a sticky card inside a simple trap carrying a synthetic female box tree moth pheromone, catch the male moths as they fly and tell you when the adult generation is active. Buy at least one trap and hang it in or near the affected box in April. Check it weekly. When you first catch moths, wait 7-14 days for the eggs to hatch into small caterpillars, then start the Btk spray programme.

The box tree moth has two to three generations per year in southern England, and in a warm year, the RHS now considers three to four generations possible in Kent. A single trap deployed through April to September gives you the timing information to catch each generation before the caterpillars establish.

Step 3: Apply Btk with a drench, not a surface spray

Because box tree moth caterpillars feed from inside the bush, applying Btk to the outside surface of the foliage treats the wrong surface. The product needs to reach the foliage inside the canopy where the caterpillars are actually eating.

Use a sprayer set to fine mist and physically push the wand into the bush to drench the interior branches. Work around the full circumference of the hedge or topiary piece. Apply after 6pm when temperatures are lower and caterpillars are more active on the foliage. Apply three sprays at 14-day intervals per generation. Reapply after rain heavier than 5mm, as Btk is UV-sensitive and washes off. Store the concentrate away from direct light between applications.

Read the product label for the specific Btk formulation you buy: concentration rates and spray interval guidance vary slightly between brands. Follow the MAPP (Ministerial Approval of Pesticide Products) number on the label to confirm the product is registered for this use in the UK.

Step 4: Remove caterpillars by hand from smaller topiary pieces

For a single box ball or small clipped piece rather than a run of hedge, hand-picking caterpillars is faster and more thorough than spraying. Wear gloves. Pull back sections of foliage and remove caterpillars directly into a bucket of soapy water. The webbing makes them easier to spot once you know what to look for. Check every three or four days through an active generation. For a large hedge run this is impractical, but for the box topiary that appears in many Broadstairs front gardens, hand-picking is often the more precise tool.

Step 5: For box blight, cut out affected material and clean tools between every cut

Box blight spreads via fungal spores, and cutting through infected material with an unclean blade transfers spores to every subsequent cut. This is why blight in a formally trimmed hedge often appears in a line or streak that matches the direction of a single trimmer pass: the trimmer was the vector.

Cut affected branches back to healthy green tissue, leaving at least 5cm of healthy stem below the last visibly infected point. Bag all removed material as ordinary household waste and put it in the bin. Do not shred it on site, do not compost it, do not stack it in the garden: the spores survive composting and will re-infect from the heap. After each cut, wipe blades with a cloth soaked in dilute bleach (one part bleach to four parts water) or isopropyl alcohol, and allow to dry before the next cut. This applies whether you are cutting by hand or with a trimmer.

Does blight removal count as trimming under the nesting-season rules?

Yes. Cutting into box foliage and stems, whether for cosmetic trimming or blight removal, is covered by section 1 of the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981 if the bush contains an active nest. Box is dense enough to attract nesting from blackbirds, robins, sparrows and dunnocks, particularly in established topiary pieces and thick garden hedging. Before any cutting work between 1 March and 31 August, visually check the interior of the box for an active nest: a compact cup of grass and mud, usually containing eggs or chicks. If you find one, leave that section until the brood has fledged. Penalty for intentionally destroying an active nest or disturbing a bird on a nest: up to six months in prison and an unlimited fine per nest. A blight-removal job is not exempt from this check.

Step 6: Apply a copper-based fungicide as a preventive measure after removal

Copper-based fungicides (copper oxychloride or Bordeaux mixture, both available in garden centres and online for amateur use) do not cure an existing blight infection, but they do reduce the likelihood of re-infection after removal. Apply a thorough coat to all remaining foliage after you have cut out the infected material and the cut surfaces have dried. Apply again in autumn, after the main annual trim, when the hedge is going into the wet months with fresh cut surfaces. A third application in early spring before the foliage begins active growth is also useful.

Do not apply copper-based fungicides immediately before rain. The product needs at least two to three dry hours to adhere properly to the leaf surface. Check the forecast and apply on a dry, still day.

Step 7: Reduce the conditions that allow blight to establish

Box blight (Pseudonectria buxi) is a wet-weather fungal disease. It needs high humidity, free moisture on leaf surfaces, and poor air movement to establish and spread rapidly. Several routine care changes reduce the risk:

Is box still the right plant for your Broadstairs garden?

Box blight arrived in the UK in 1994 and box tree moth was first recorded here in 2008. Both are now established across every English county. The honest assessment is that box in a sheltered, humid, shaded position, particularly under other foliage, in an enclosed Victorian terrace courtyard, or against a north-facing wall, is now a very high-maintenance plant compared to the same spot in 1990. In a position with reasonable air movement and reliable drainage, box is still manageable with the steps above. On the Thanet chalk, box actually establishes well: the fast-draining alkaline soil reduces one of the main blight triggers (waterlogged roots), and the coastal wind provides the air circulation that shaded inland positions lack.

For Broadstairs gardens where box has repeatedly failed despite treatment, or where the topiary programme is too labour-intensive to maintain, species that provide similar visual structure without the same pest and disease exposure include:

Replacing box topiary is a multi-year commitment: even fast-growing alternatives take three to five years to reach the size a mature box piece occupied. Factor that timeline in honestly before deciding to start over.

Box in Broadstairs conservation areas

Box hedges and topiary pieces in the three Broadstairs conservation areas (Broadstairs CA, St Peter's CA and Reading Street CA) are subject to the usual Thanet District Council section 211 six-week notice rules if the work involves removing a tree-sized specimen. Low box edging and hedge runs of typical domestic scale are not usually covered, but a box ball or cone that has grown to a significant size over several decades can qualify.
