Planting a coastal hedge on North Foreland chalk.
The stretch from Stone Bay through the North Foreland Estate out to Kingsgate is one of the harder planting sites in Kent. Thin, sharply alkaline chalk over solid rock. Salt-laden N/NE wind straight off the North Sea. Roughly 613mm of rain a year, among the driest zones in England. The species list that survives here is short, the planting technique is not the same as for an inland garden, and the watering regime in year one decides everything.
What you are actually planting into
Thanet is the type area for the Margate Chalk Member: Upper Cretaceous White Chalk, marl-free and flint-poor. The topsoil layer is often only 15-30cm deep over solid chalk. That has three consequences that shape every planting decision:
- Sharply alkaline pH (typically 7.5-8.2). Anything ericaceous: rhododendron, camellia, pieris, azalea, blueberries, will chlorose and die. Do not plant them.
- Poor moisture retention. Water passes through the chalk fast; roots that don't reach down don't drink. Manston records just 612.6mm/yr and 1,846 hours of sunshine. Drought, not cold, is the year-one killer.
- Shallow rooting profile. Species that make a broad root plate (holm oak, hawthorn, Escallonia) do fine. Species that want to send down a deep taproot (walnut, some conifers) do not.
Front line vs second line: the difference matters
"Front line" means the first row facing the sea, taking salt-laden air with no intervening structure. Stone Bay clifftop gardens, the North Foreland Estate outer plots, seafront Kingsgate villas. "Second line" means one or two rows back, sheltered by another hedge or a building. Species choice diverges hard between the two.
Front-line species that hold up
Escallonia (E. macrantha, E. 'Iveyi'), Olearia macrodonta, Tamarix, Elaeagnus × ebbingei, Euonymus japonicus, holm oak (Quercus ilex), sea buckthorn (Hippophae rhamnoides). Every one of these is proven on this specific coast, not just "seaside-tolerant" in the abstract.
Second-line species: where the front line already exists or where a building takes the direct wind, open the list up considerably: yew, hawthorn, Pittosporum tenuifolium, privet, holly, laurel. All of these are good hedges. None of them wants to be on a clifftop unprotected.
The yew myth-bust
The most common bit of misinformation on the local nursery circuit is "yew hates the seaside." It is repeated confidently and it is wrong for this coast. Yew (Taxus baccata) is native to the North Downs chalk. It is why every historic East-Kent churchyard has ancient yews in it. It handles the alkaline soil better than most other conifers and is moderately salt-tolerant.
What it does not want is the full front-line salt-blast unprotected. Set it back a row behind an Escallonia or holm oak windbreak and yew produces one of the finest formal hedges available, dense, dark, salt-scorch-free, and effectively permanent. In St Peter's, Pierremont and set-back Stone Bay plots, yew is a superb choice.
What consistently fails on this coast
- Griselinia littoralis. Sold as bulletproof. In a hard East-Kent winter, the town's continental exposure means we get colder snaps than Cornwall or Devon, mature plants show tip dieback along shoot ends. Some recover, some do not. Use Escallonia or Olearia instead for the same brief.
- Beech. Salt-scorches by July on the front line. Fine well inland at Reading Street or the St Peter's outskirts, wrong on the clifftop.
- Common laurel. Leaf-margin burn from salt spray. Reliably ugly by August on a front-line plot.
- Leylandii. The failure mode people miss: mature Leylandii on shallow chalk topsoil do not die of salt, they fall over in the winter gales. Windthrow risk climbs sharply past 4m of standing height on this soil profile.
- Photinia 'Red Robin'. Popular, fashionable, wrong site. Suffers on windswept chalk.
Planting technique on Margate chalk
Do this properly and you get a 90%+ establishment rate. Do it the way the nursery leaflet suggests and you lose a third of the plants in year one.
- Dig a trench, not individual holes. Minimum 40cm deep and 40cm wide, along the full run. Individual holes on chalk create bathtubs, water pools in them and roots do not spread laterally into the surrounding pan. A continuous trench breaks up the compacted chalk and gives roots a route sideways.
- Backfill with a compost-loam blend, not pure compost. Roughly 2 parts topsoil to 1 part compost to 1 part original chalk-subsoil. Pure compost holds too much water in the first winter and rots the roots.
- Mycorrhizal inoculant on the roots at planting. On thin chalk, this measurably improves year-one establishment.
- Plant bare-root November to March where possible. Bare-root establishes faster on chalk than container-grown because the root system extends directly into the soil rather than staying wound in the pot shape. Container-grown works any month, but expect slower establishment.
- Mulch 8-10cm deep with composted bark immediately after planting. Non-negotiable on this coast. The mulch holds moisture through the June-July dry spell that would otherwise kill the plants.
- Rabbit guards if you are inland of the seafront. Rabbit pressure on new plantings around St Peter's and Reading Street is real.
Year-one watering regime: the one that decides survival
This is the part every failed planting has in common. On the driest coast in England, "water in and hope" does not work. The regime that does:
- Planting day: 20 litres per metre of hedge, watered in slowly, let it soak.
- March to end of September, year one: 15-20 litres per metre per week, split across two waterings, in the morning. Skip only if there has been more than 15mm of actual rain in the preceding four days, not "it drizzled".
- October to February, year one: only if the ground goes visibly dry. Usually one or two top-ups.
- Year two: water through June to September only, and only in genuinely dry weeks.
- Year three onward: established. Only intervene in drought years.
Drip irrigation on a tap timer pays for itself the first season on any hedge longer than 15 metres. On a North Foreland Estate absentee-owner plot, it is the difference between the hedge existing and not existing when the owners visit in September.
