Tall Leylandii Beside a Garden Shed, Near Dumpton Gap

Photo of the job.

Wind is the thing you notice in a Broadstairs garden. It comes off the sea, finds the gaps and works at whatever has been left loose. For a tall leylandii hedge, that matters.

The job

A tall leylandii run beside a garden shed in a garden near Dumpton Gap. The hedge had been left to bulk out, which makes a conifer heavy on top and thin at the base, and a tall, loose hedge in an exposed spot is the first thing to open up in a gale.

What we did

We cut the hedge back to a firm, even face and shaped it with a slight batter, so it is a little wider at the bottom than at the top. That gives it stability and lets light down to the lower branches, which stops the base going bare. The top was levelled and the corner by the shed squared up, leaving a clear working gap for the owner.

All cuttings were cleared from the lawn and the border beside the shed and taken away.

Coastal conditions

Salt wind, thin chalky soil and exposure all affect how a hedge ages. A tighter shape means less surface for the wind to push against, and cutting only to green growth means it can recover rather than browning off. These are things we plan for as a matter of course.

What you can expect

The considered clip means we do what the hedge needs and no more. You get a quote first, no deposit and no upfront fee, and a proper job or you pay nothing. Pensioners get 5% off, and repeat jobs over a certain size get 10% off.
