Reduction vs topping: the difference matters

Topping is what you get when a tree's branches are cut back to arbitrary points along the wood, leaving stubs with no lateral to draw sap. The tree responds with a mass of weakly-attached water-sprouts from the wound area, all of which will need cutting again inside 3 years, and are structurally worse than what was removed. Topping shortens tree life, ruins tree shape and creates recurring bills for the owner. I don't do it. If a job can only be solved by topping, the honest answer is usually to fell and replant.

Reduction cuts each branch back to a lateral of at least one-third the diameter of the branch being removed. The lateral takes over as the new terminal, draws the sap, and grows into a natural-looking replacement leader. No stubs. No water-sprout explosion. The tree keeps its shape.

When reduction is the right call

• The tree has outgrown its position, shading a whole garden, threatening a boundary, hanging over a neighbour's roof
• Clifftop wind-loading is a real concern, a mature dense-crowned tree above Stone Bay or Kingsgate catches every north-easterly, and reducing spread drops the wind resistance significantly
• You want the tree to stay for its shape, character or wildlife value, but scaled down
• The alternative is a fell, and you'd rather not

How much you can take

A well-executed single reduction removes no more than 20–30% of the live crown. More than that and the tree throws water-sprouts as a stress response, which undoes the work inside 2–3 years. If the target requires a bigger drop than that, I stage it: reduce to an interim height this winter, let the tree respond, and cut again to final height 2 years later.

Species notes

• Sycamore, lime, London plane, ash: respond well to a properly-done reduction; ash only where dieback assessment shows the wood is still sound
• Holm oak: reduces cleanly on seafront plots. Late winter or midsummer only.
• Oak (English/sessile): a light reduction only, and only outside the acute-oak-decline monitoring window. Big oaks and heavy reductions don't mix.
• Cedar, monkey puzzle, coastal Monterey pine: do not reduce; they don't recover shape. Fell-and-replant is the honest option.
• Leylandii and other cypress: will not regenerate from brown wood. Staged reduction only, and only if there's still green foliage where you want the new outline.

Before I cut

Reductions almost always trip either section-211 CA notice (any stem over 75mm in one of Broadstairs' three conservation areas) or a full TPO application. Both are non-negotiable and both are handled as part of the quote. Thanet District Council enforcement on protected trees is real: unauthorised works can carry a fine of up to £20,000 per tree. If the paperwork can't happen inside the customer's timeline, I say so up front, no ripped-out job on the day.
